HOW TO BUILD A CAPSULE COLLECTION

Tags: capsule, collection, Style Syllabus, wardrobe, winter

Deciding what to wear requires mental energy better spent on other things.  Instead of trying on several outfits getting ready in the morning in hopes of finding the perfect thing to wear, try curating a small capsule wardrobe. You get to wear your favorite things every day!

Step 1: Cleanse Your Closet

But, before adding to your current wardrobe, take a moment to assess what is hanging in your closet. Starting off the new year with a closet cleanse can be a great way to refresh your current wardrobe.  Try separating all of your clothing into these categories:

Love: I love these items. They fit me well and I wear them frequently.

Maybe: I want to keep this but I don’t know why.  Maybe there is some emotional attachment, they might fit someday, or you have a special occasion in mind. A great way to weed out these pieces is to face the hanger backward and if you don’t wear them in 6 months it’s time to get rid of them.

Donate: These items don’t fit my body or my life.

Trash: These items are in poor condition. (repurpose if possible)

Once your closet is full of everything you love and wear, you are ready to add a seasonal capsule collection.

Step 2: Plan Your Capsule

By creating a capsule collection of minimal pieces you wear almost every day any way you create a cleaner less stressful style. Capsule wardrobes differ from uniform wear because it has more options and combinations than the same look every day. Usually, a capsule consists of a set number of pieces of clothing that you wear for a season before starting the next capsule. Clothing is only added to the selection at the start of each capsule, encouraging you to remix and re-wear rather than shopping for new pieces. Lucky for you our stylists here at Plvsh have already curated our ideal capsule collection for winter 2018.

PLVSH Winter Capsule Collection

  1. 1. Structured Cardigan

    Exelle Bouble Snap Cardigan

This cozy, round-neck cardi is the perfect piece for your winter wardrobe. In sumptuous shades of cream and brownish-gray, this sweater will become your go to item all season long. Try wearing it with the comeback kid of the year–the turtleneck.

  1. 2. White Button Up Shirt

Universal Standard White Button Down

Your search for the ultimate go-to white button-down ends here! Universal Standard has added beautiful pleats for a polished look and comfortable feel. This classic and crisp piece is a staple for any closet and one that you’ll come back to time and time again. For a pop of color, layer your Elbe over a camisole of your choice.

  1. 3. Moto Cardigan

Nic + Zoe Soft Line Moto Cardigan

Nic + Zoe have brought us another hybrid outerwear piece that you need to have! This jacket is part cardigan and part moto jacket and all style! With a sleek side zip and oversized lapels, this piece will be a versatile, comfortable and stylish addition to any wardrobe. Wear as a cardigan over a tank or shell and slacks or as a jacket over a tee shirt and jeans.

  1. 4. Poncho/Sweater

    Hope & Harvest Knit Cape

Ponchos are hot this season and this version is one of our favorites.  This chic and luxurious poncho is made with a classic cable knit detailing along with an overlapped collar to keep you warm this winter. Be ready to go anywhere, night or day in seconds! For a chilly night out, pair with Slink Skinny jean.

  1. 5. Tank Top

Karen Kane Super Soft White Tank

This super soft tank is sophisticated enough for work, but casual enough for play! This tank can be layered underneath your outfit each and every day and the soft fabric will feel divine against your skin. Goes beautifully with any cardi or blazer, but we especially love it with the Nic + Zoe Soft Line Moto Cardi for work or leisure. Also available in cream and black.

  1. 6. Little Black Wrap Dress

Kiyonna Essential Wrap Dress

Ever since Diane von Furstenberg created the iconic wrap dress back in 1974, it has become a staple in every woman’s closet.  The silhouette of the dress is flattering on almost all body types and the wrap front helps to hide any minor flaws you may want to draw attention away from.  Layer this dress under a cardigan, and pair it with heels or with tights and tall boots.

  1. 7. Black Pants

    Lysee Black Ponte Leggings

Look no further for the ultimate black leggings! These leggings are a PLVSH client favorite.  Known for its tummy panel, which keeps you tucked in, without making you feel uncomfortable, these soft ponte leggings from Lysse are a must have for every closet.  You’ll wear them all season long and for years to come. Versatile enough to wear with ballet flats, sneakers or boots.  Pair this with a looser top to balance out the form-fitting bottom.

  1. 8. Dark Wash Blue Jeans

Slink Jeans Dark Wash Skinny

Dark wash skinny jeans are a wardrobe staple that every woman should have as part of her casual wardrobe.  Pair them with almost everything in your closet, and then depending on the event, throw on heels, sandals, or boots to complete the look. A great option for business casual Fridays, pair these with a great white tank or tee and a fitted black blazer and some ankle boots for a look that’ll show them who’s boss.

  1. 9. On-Trend Suede Pants

Lysee Buff Suede Leggings

With smooth and soft suede texturing, these leggings are a must-have statement piece. The sleek and slimming design gives you all the edge of a leather pant while keeping you comfortable too. For those who are a bit nervous about wearing a leather pant, pair this with a longer length tunic like our Nic + Zoe Bell Sleeve Blouse or the Hope and Harvest Knit Cape in Black on those chilly fall and winter days!
